A study examined the efficacy and safety of the herb Corydalis for the treatment of pain related to osteoarthritis of the knee. 79 patients with knee osteoarthritis were divided into a test group and a control group. The test group received 12 weeks of treatment with the Corydalis herb. The control group received 12 weeks of treatment with diclofenac, an NSAID. The main outcomes measured were pain on walking and tenderness to palpation. Herbal treatment in the group that received Corydalis was performed as well as in the group that received treatment with diclofenac. This study shows that herbal treatment can be an alternative option to NSAID treatment for patients with pain associated with osteoarthritis who want to avoid the adverse effects of long-term NSAID use.
